NEMLEC Mountain Bike Unit:

The NEMLEC Mountain Bike Unit is a specialized division within the North Eastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council (NEMLEC), composed of trained police officers from member agencies who operate on mountain bikes. This unit is deployed in a variety of settings where traditional patrol vehicles may not be practical or effective, such as parks, downtown areas, school campuses, and during large public events. The bike patrol allows officers to navigate crowded areas quickly while maintaining high visibility and accessibility to the public.

Officers in the Mountain Bike Unit undergo specialized training in tactical riding techniques, crowd control, and emergency response, ensuring they can operate efficiently in both urban and off-road environments. Their presence often serves a dual purpose—enhancing community policing efforts while also providing rapid response capabilities in areas with limited vehicle access. The unit is frequently deployed during parades, festivals, marathons, and other community events to ensure safety and promote engagement.

Key components of the NEMLEC Mountain Bike team:

  • Specialized Tactical Training – Officers are trained in maneuvering, emergency response, and crowd control on bikes.
  • Enhanced Mobility – Allows access to areas not easily reached by patrol cars, including trails, campuses, and dense crowds.
  • Community Engagement – Promotes positive interactions between officers and the public in a more approachable setting.
  • Referral to Mental Health Professionals/Resources: If necessary, CISM Team members can offer referrals and resources for further support.

Event Support and Security – Provides rapid, visible law enforcement presence during public events and emergencies.
